Winter can be a difficult time for landscaping, but that doesn’t mean you can’t add color to your yard. With the right planning and preparation, you can create a beautiful winter landscape that will brighten up even the coldest days. Here are five tips on how to add cold-weather color to your yard:

1. Plant Evergreens

To add color and texture to your winter landscape, plant evergreen shrubs and trees. Evergreens will stay green throughout the winter, providing a bright and cheerful contrast against the snow. These plants are also a great choice for providing shelter and habitat for birds and other wildlife.

2. Use Evergreen Groundcovers

Evergreen groundcovers are a great way to add color and texture to your yard in winter. These plants grow low to the ground and can be used to fill in bare spots or to add color to walkways and other areas of your yard. They also have other benefits, including providing erosion control, helping to keep weeds away, and adding beauty to your outdoor space. Plus, they are low maintenance and require minimal upkeep.

3. Plant Winter-Blooming Plants

If you want to add a splash of color to your winter landscape, consider planting winter-blooming plants such as pansies, violas, and primroses. These plants will bloom in the winter, providing a welcome burst of color during the coldest months. Flowers can provide a cheerful touch to your yard during winter. Pansies are one of the hardiest flowers, and they come in a variety of colors and sizes. Violas, snapdragons, and kale are also great cold-weather options. Planting them in containers will help protect them from frost and snow.

4. Incorporate Lights

To really make your winter landscape shine, consider adding lights. String lights around trees, along pathways, or around containers for an extra touch of sparkle and color. Adding lights to your yard adds a touch of seasonal cheer to your outdoor space.  And an added bonus is that extra lights can make your yard safer in the dark winter months.

5. Add Bird Feeders or Birdhouses

If you’d like to add even more color to your yard without having to plant anything, consider hanging bird feeders or birdhouses. Bird feeders and birdhouses can be found in a variety of colors, and they’re sure to attract feathered friends to your yard. Not only will the birds add vibrant colors to your yard, but they will also provide entertainment for everyone in your household.

Winter landscaping can be a challenge, but with the right planning and preparation, you can create a beautiful winter landscape full of color and texture. Use these tips to add cold-weather color to your winter landscape and make your yard the envy of the neighborhood.
